While his long-term status is still far from certain, Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy had a positive update on tight end Jermichael Finley on Monday.

Jermichael FinleyLess than 24 hours after suffering an injury that forced Finley to spend the night in the hospital, McCarthy said that the sixth-year player was “very upbeat, very positive” and performing daily activities.

Finley still remains hospitalized as further tests are going to be conducted, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The fourth-quarter play on which Finley was injured drew a 15-yard penalty on Cleveland Browns defensive back Tashaun Gipson, although McCarthy didn’t see it as a dirty play.

“I don’t really know what you can do,” McCarthy said of the collision. “It seemed like one of  those situations that just went that way…I didn’t see anything, I don’t know what any of the players involved could have done differently.”

With no timetable given on Finley’s return, the Packers will have to plan on moving forward without their starting tight end. Finley had posted modest receiving totals of 300 yards on 25 receptions, so far this season, but was a talented and potent part of the Packers’ high-powered offense.

Green Bay will now be without Randall Cobb and Finley for the foreseeable future, and the status of wideout James Jones is still up in the air. The Packers remained fairly balanced on Sunday with 36 pass attempts and 29 rush attempts, but more of the offensive burden could shift to the ever-improving running game with another pass catcher out.
